The ingredients needed to prepare Idli sambhar:

  1. Prepare 1 tsp of cumin seeds / jeera.
  2. Get 1 big bowl of boiled tuar daal.
  3. Use 1 big bowl of boiled tuar daal.
  4. Get 1 tsp of urad dal /black gram.
  5. Use 2 tsp of coriander seeds.
  6. Use 1 tsp of chana dal /bengali gram.
  7. Take 1/4 tsp of methi seeds / fenugreek seeds.
  8. Take 5 of kashmiri red chillis dried.
  9. Use as needed of few curry leaves.
  10. Use 1 tsp of oil.
  11. You need 1/4 of onion roughly chopped.
  12. Take 1/2 tsp of garlic paste.
  13. Prepare 1/4 cup of coconut fresh / desiccated.
  14. You need as needed of small gooseberry sized tamarind.
  15. Get 1/2 tsp of garam masala powder.
  16. Take as required of water to blend smooth.
  17. Provide 1/2 of onion diced into cubes.
  18. Provide 1/2 of potato diced into cubes.
  19. Get 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder.
  20. Take to taste of salt.
  21. You need 1/4 cup of beans chopped.
  22. Provide 3 cups of water or as required to adjust consistency.
  23. Provide as needed of small piece of jaggery / gud.
  24. Take as needed of few coriander leaves chopped.
  25. You need of For tempering.
  26. Prepare 1 tsp of oil.
  27. Get 3/4 tsp of mustard seeds.
  28. Prepare 3/4 tsp of urad dal.
  29. Take pinch of hing / asafoetida.
  30. Take as needed of few curry leaves.

Steps to make Idli sambhar:

  1. In a wide pan add oil, cumin seeds, urad dal, chana dal, coriander seeds, methi, red chillis and few curry leaves.
  2. Now add some onions and garlic paste.
  3. Switch off the flame and add coconut.
  4. Add a piece of tamarind and garam masala powder..
  5. Blend to smooth paste.
  6. In a large kadai add a tsp of oil and saute diced onions till they sweat..
  7. Now add potatoes and fry for a minute.
  8. Along with water also add turmeric and salt to taste.
  9. Now add beans and cook for a minute.
  10. Add prepared masala paste and give a good stir. boil for 5-8 minutes.
  11. Add cooked dal.
  12. Also add 2-3 cups of water to get desired consistency.
  13. Add a small piece of jaggery.
  14. Prepare the tempering and pour it to sambar.
  15. Add few chopped coriander leaves and give a good mix.

But this was new to me when I went to my husband's home. This goes well with idli and dosa. I make it almost every other week now. This is so versatile and less work. So this tiffin sambar will be great for your busy weekday dinners.
